Cassowary Coast Region

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is in the Far North Queensland region of Queensland, Australia, south of Cairns and centred on the towns of Innisfail, Cardwell and Tully. It's the result of from a 2008 merger of the Shire of Cardwell and the Shire of Johnstone.

An American Bomb Group Squadron based in Charters Towers crashed into Mount Bartle Frere on 21 April 1942 while returning from a search mission in the Coral Sea. They flew into a blind gully which lead to the peak of Mount Bartle Frere.

The Thumb, a granite monolith pinnacle high on a ridge of the Mount Bowen massif, was one of the last sought-after, unclimbed summits in Australia in 1952. Just off the north Queensland coast on Hinchinbrook Island, The Thumb can be seen breaking the horizon, just waiting to be explored.

Mount Diamantina rises 955 metres above sea level and is located within the Hinchinbrook Island National Park in Far North Queensland. Although Mt Diamantina may be considered the easiest of the four main mountains to summit, it is also desirable by many due to its unique boulders on top.

This well-worn track takes hikers through tropical rainforest and eucalyptus scrub, climbing up the ridgeline to the summit where they will enjoy panoramic views of Tully township and a mosaic of cane and banana farms, the coastline and islands.

On one stormy morning in 1942, a B24 Liberator slammed into Mt Straloch exploding on impact and killing all 12 people on board. The heavy storms around Ingham and Cardwell hide the big peaks of Hinchinbrook Island which the crew were not expecting while flying over the sea.
